THE MAKING OF A LOVELY CARDIGAN IN TUNISIAN CROCHET In the last little while, as you may have noticed, I have been working on an ambitious project: the creation of a Tunisian crochet garment, using a leaf motif (or "spades", as I preferred to call it) already seen in some wonderful knitting projects. First, I thought about replicating the spade pattern in Tunisian crochet, which was not difficult, as I have created similar patterns before - you can find them, for example, in these projects of mine: Leaf it On Shawl , Leaf it On Scarf , Leaf it On Cowl . Leaf it On Scarf Next, I thought it best to make a garment that had a simple workmanship, i.e. worked flat, and not in the round, to avoid, at least initially, over-complicating the design. A cardigan, therefore, was the best choice. Next, I chose a yarn that I liked and opted for a fine multicoloured yarn. This was the result: "QUEEN OF SPADES" - THE CAL! I liked the finished garment very much, and so did you, whic...
Thanks to the
very nature of Tunisian Crochet, created through two intertwining stages (remember the Foundation Row?), colour
change can help you obtain beautiful colour work in your projects. Indeed, this is one of the greatest qualities of Tunisian Crochet, what makes its texture look so easily recognizable and peculiarly beautiful! You can
change colour everywhere within a row, but the results will be different. If you change colour right before the Return Pass (RP), at the left edge, the new colour will
mix beautifully with the previous one, creating a blended shade, whereas if you
change it at the beginning of the Forward Pass (FP, at the right edge) the colour change will
be neat. Here are the basic colour change methods in Tunisian Crochet.
COLOUR CHANGE
AT LEFT EDGE
Start a standard Reverse Pass by yarning over with colour B,
pulling through one loop only once, then through two loops together till the end
of the row.

COLOUR CHANGE
AT RIGHT EDGE
Towards the end of the RP, with just two loops left on your
hook, yarn over with colour B and pull through, completing the RP. You will end
up with one loop on the hook in colour B, ready to start the next FP in this colour.
This way the colour change will be neat, and the colours will not mix together
as by colour changing at left edge.

COLOUR CHANGE
WITHIN THE ROW
In the FP, insert the hook under a Vertical Bar, yarn over with
colour B and pull up a
loop. This way the colour change will be neat.

If you want
the colours NOT to mix together and you need to create distinct areas of colours,
remember to change yarn in the RP, too, yarning over with the right colour
thread at the right time (where you changed colour in the FP) as you proceed
across.
